Plein Air Workshop with Je

When portable paint tubes were introduced, artists quickly left the studio behind and headed outdoors. Painting en plein air remains one of the most powerful ways to capture the world around us—because no camera can replicate the uniquely human way we see, interpret, and feel a scene.

Led by visiting artist Je, known for a thoughtful and engaging approach to painting, this workshop invites you to slow down, observe closely, and translate what you see into your own expressive work.

(In case of rain, the workshop will move indoors and work from reference photos and/or still life.)

Schedule: Friday, August 14, 10:00am-4:00pm (w/ 1 hour lunch break)

What you’ll learn

This workshop will focus on using a minimum outdoor color palette as well as  ideas for painting when traveling. The class will start with a brief instruction on how to begin the painting session. Once students are settled in, the instructor will work with each student based on their chosen medium. 

While Je will be demonstrating with oil paint, you may choose to bring your own preferred medium instead.

Materials List

Painting Materials will be provided, but please bring your own if you prefer.

Bring: water, your lunch (or you can take a lunch break off site), sunscreen, a hat, bug spray.

Meet Your Instructor

  • Je is a contemporary painter whose work focuses primarily on figurative painting and landscape. Drawing inspiration from people and place, his work explores the human figure and the environments that surround us.

    JE studied at Boston College, the Art Students League of New York, and the New York Academy of Art. He participated in the NYC Artist Residency at Dacia Gallery in New York.

    His work has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the 2024 Xavier Gonzalez & Ethel Edwards Travel Grant and multiple awards and recognitions through the Art Students League’s Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery.

    JE is a member of the Art Students League of New York and NoMAA (Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance). His work has been exhibited in group exhibitions throughout New York, including at the Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery, Dacia Gallery, and through NoMAA’s Uptown Arts Stroll. His paintings are held in private collections across the United States and internationally, including in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Nice, and throughout New York and New England.
