Hand-Building Ceramics (2-Part Workshop)
Discover the joy of working with clay in this hands-on, two-part ceramics workshop. Hand-building offers a uniquely tactile and meditative way to create functional and sculptural pieces while exploring your creativity. There is something deeply rewarding about transforming a simple piece of clay into an object made by your own hands—one that reflects your personal style, imagination, and touch.
Schedule: Friday, August 28 from 10am -1pm & September 4 from 10am -1pm
Course Fee: $160 for both sessions (includes all materials)

What You'll Learn
Over two 3-hour sessions, students will learn the fundamentals of hand building ceramics using three traditional techniques: pinching, slab building, and coil building. In the first session, you’ll experiment with these methods to shape and form your own pieces, gaining confidence in working with clay while creating objects that are both beautiful and personal.
The clay will then have time to dry and undergo a bisque firing. When we meet again one week later, students will bring their creations to life with color, painting and glazing their work using a variety of finishes and techniques. A final glaze firing will complete the process, transforming your handmade pieces into finished ceramic works.
No prior ceramics experience is necessary—just curiosity, a willingness to experiment, and a desire to make something uniquely yours.
You will be notified when the pieces are ready for pick up. (Shipping can be arranged through SIAC for an additional charge).

Megan Hergrueter is a ceramic artist and instructor who has taught private classes for more than 25 years.
Her work is inspired by the natural beauty, texture and colors of the island she loves, Shelter Island. She is a member of ARTSI (Shelter Island Open Studios).
